We are excited to announce our upcoming field trip to Tiritiri Matangi Island 9-12 May 2024.

Tiritiri Matangi Island is a sanctuary offering a pest-free environment for rare and endangered wildlife.

ISLAND ACCOMMODATION

The bunkhouse is the only accommodation on Tiritiri Matangi.

It is a communal facility and it has limited availability as it is primarily used by volunteers and students carrying out work on the island.

Facilities

Gas stove and oven

  • Microwave oven

  • BBQ

  • Two fridges and a freezer

  • All cutlery, crockery, utensils etc

  • Pots and pans

  • Dishwashing liquid, dish cloths and dish brushes

  • Tea towels

  • Drinking water (rain water from the tap)

  • Two hot showers

  • Two toilets (toilet paper provided)

  • 3 rooms for public use, with 15 bunk beds in total:

    • Room 1 Kahu: 4 beds

    • Room 2 Kokako: 5 beds

    • Room 3 Tuatara: 6 beds

What to bring

  • Warm clothes, comfortable walking shoes, wet weather gear etc

  • Walking poles if you like to use them

  • A sleeping bag, a pillow case, a sheet to cover the mattress, pillows and towels

  • Rubbish bags

  • Food must be in rodent-proof containers, like a sealed box. Please do not bring food in open bags or supermarket bags. This is to help prevent an accidental introduction of pests.

  • Backpack for daily activities

  • Personal medication, personal first aid kit

  • Torch / Flashlight for walking at night

PAYMENT / COSTS

Payment must be made to Project Tongariro in order to secure your spot on this trip. Please note numbers are limited to 15.

PLEASE NOTE THAT ALL BOOKINGS ARE NON-REFUNDABLE IF YOU CANCEL THIS TRIP

Project Tongariro will operate a waitlist for this trip to help fill any cancelled trips or you may nominate someone to take your space. However, if you or Project Tongariro cannot fill the space, no refund will be issued.

  • Tiritiri Matangi Bunkroom accommodation: $42 per person

  • Tiritiri Matangi Ferry: $95 per person (return)

  • Koha (for guest speaker): $10 per person

  • $6 Booking Fee

WEEKEND SCHEDULE

Thursday 9th May 2024

Travel to Auckland - Settle into accommodation. Participants must book their own accommodation in Auckland.

When booking accommodation, please bear in mind that we are based on the Island on Friday night, so it may be difficult to book Thursday and Saturday (two, one-night stays). We advise you do this as soon as possible.

We suggest booking accommodation in Takapuna as it is central and close to the activity planned for Sunday.

Tiritiri Matangi Wharf and Tiri Kat Ferry by Avenue

Friday 10th May 2024

Catch the Explore Ferry from Gulf Harbour to Tiritiri Matangi departing 9:55 am - Arrives Tiritiri Matangi at 10.20 am.

Cost: $95 per person

Project Tongariro will be making a group booking on the ferry once bookings have closed.

For those staying at Takapuna, carpool or take individual vehicles.  Approx 45min travel from Takapuna to Gulf Harbour.

Please make sure you arrive at the Gulf Harbour Ferry Car Park (public parking) by 9.30 am. Overnight parking is available at Laurie Southwick Parade, Ferry Terminal, Gulf Harbour, Whangaparāoa.

10.20 am Arrive at Tirirtiri Matangi, bags will be unloaded onto a trolley for delivery to the bunkhouse.

Accommodation on Tiritri Matangi Island is the DOC bunkhouse.  This is approximately a 40-minute walk from the Wharf to the Bunkhouse.

Book a guided walk ($10 per person) for Saturday morning at the information centre – 3 options are available Walks are up to 2.5 hours long - Please book and pay for this on the Island.

Rest of the day - explore the Island. 

All meals: self-catering, please bring your food to the island.

Saturday 11th May

Breakfast: Self-catering at the Bunkhouse

Clean Bunkhouse and pack bags for delivery to Wharf later in the day

AM activity: 10.00 am Guided walk

Picnic lunch, self-catering

Depart Tiritiri Matangi Island Saturday at 4.00 pm.  Arrives Gulf Harbour 4.25 pm

Travel to accommodation (Self Booked)

Dinner: Self-catering at accommodation or explore eateries in Takapuna

SUNDAY 12 May 2024

Breakfast, self-catering

Travel to Tuff Crater and park at the Cannon carpark (the big Cannon building) in Warehouse Way.  It is just off the motorway.  Exit at Esmonde Road / Takapuna and onto Akoranga Drive, then onto Warehouse Way.

9.00 - 10.30 am Visit Tuff Crater, an extinct volcano and meet with North Shore Forest and Bird (Richard Hursthouse) to hear about the Tuff Crater Restoration Project.

Lunch at Tuff Crater Reserve (self-catering) .

People disperse after lunch and head home.
